Georgia Fresh For Less
Healthy LivingCHW’s Mulberry Market proudly participates in the Georgia Fresh for Less program in partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia and the United States Department of Agriculture. Through this year-round program we are able to double SNAP/EBT dollars for use at the Mulberry Market market.
Shoppers first swipe their SNAP/EBT card for the amount they would like to use from their account. In exchange, market staff give shoppers wooden market tokens worth that amount that can be used on any SNAP-eligible products. In addition, shoppers are also given the same amount of special green tokens that must be used to purchase fruits and vegetables.
Each year the market doubles around $10,000 in benefits for recipients. Shoppers report an increase in consumption of fresh produce, particularly during the summer and winter months when growing seasons are at peak production. Market manager Lacey Resch credits the Georgia Fresh for Less program with creating a level playing field when it comes to food budgets at the market. “Everyone should be able to purchase the fresh produce they want, whether it is an old favorite or a new item, and the Georgia Fresh for Less program makes that a possibility.”
