Senior Sit & Fit
Disease Burden, Healthy LivingCommunity Health Works partners with the Area Agency on Aging to provide nutrition and exercise education to county senior centers over the last six years. Activities have included cooking demonstrations, Tai Chi classes, laughter yoga, chair exercises, and education regarding reading nutrition labels. Every senior center has welcomed CHW employees and been thrilled for the visit. We have visited several centers numerous times over the years and always enjoy creating a new curriculum to present to them. Seniors have especially loved receiving fresh eggs and produce and inflatable rubber balls that can be used at home to help them retain muscle tone, so important for balance and maintaining an independent lifestyle.
It is our goal to provide nutrition and activity education in every county senior center in the regions we serve, which covers 45 counties through middle and southeast Georgia. Because funding for senior centers is typically one of the first budget items to be cut, we consider our outreach to the seniors a top priority. Plus, they are always so much fun!
While physical visits to our area senior centers are not possible In the current climate, CHW has translated the program resources to allow senior center leaders, as well as seniors themselves, to continue this needed education and activity. A simplified booklet is available in both digital and printed form to be distributed during meal delivery or other distribution opportunities, In addition, a recorded video is also available with CHW staff presenting the program to be used by seniors with internet access or for centers currently open with limited visitation policies, For more information or to request printed booklets, contact us at [email protected] or 478.254.5200.
