Community Health Works Receives CMS Navigator Grant

Health Care Central Georgia, Inc. d/b/a Community Health Works (CHW) was awarded 1.1 million dollars by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to be used throughout the state of Georgia in providing uninsured and underinsured individuals assistance in navigating the Affordable Care Act and the Insurance Marketplace..  This cooperative agreement will allow for navigators to be placed in six regions of Georgia, excluding the metro Atlanta area. This focused initiative will be called the Insure GA initiative and more information will be located at insureGA.org in the coming weeks. Navigators will work to assist individuals during open enrollment which begins November 15th as well as throughout the year.

CHW serves as the lead applicant of a consortium made up of itself and the 5 other cancer coalitions of Georgia which it has historically worked closely with through its focused initiative of the Central Georgia Cancer Coalition. Through the work of the CGCC, CHW works to address cancer in 26 Central Georgia counties. Together with the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, the West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition, the East Georgia Cancer Coalition, the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition and the Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance, CHW will work to provide services to many of the areas of Georgia with the highest levels of uninsured. This collaboration includes entities that are already well established and have strong ties within their communities. The collaboration between these coalitions and efforts, led by Community Health Works, will aim to truly “meet people where they are” and to provide unbiased education and resources to the uninsured of Georgia.

Community Health Works has historically worked to assist the uninsured with access to healthcare. Through this funding opportunity the organization will 1.) increase awareness of the state health exchange, 2.) increase the number of consumers who utilize the exchange, and 3.) educate consumers about the coverage availability, affordability, and the processes involved in gaining said coverage.

With over 1 million uninsured individuals within the state of Georgia, excluding the Metro Atlanta area, this program is a logical extension of the services provided by Community Health Works and the cancer coalitions because basic medical care is extremely important in reducing the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases. This funding provides assistance to the unmet need of access to basic healthcare. Community Health Works is optimistic about the future of Georgia’s uninsured as we work together to better the lives of a large population right within our own communities.
